Deep Fried and Pickled The Rachael O'Brien Chronicles Book 1 edition by Paisley Ray Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Rachel is one of the best renditions of an 18-year-old college student that I've read. Her voice is a lot of fun, and she does not hold back on either her own or other people's foibles.

The college aspect works wonderfully well. It is just as insane as college can be, especially for people on their own for the first time! it doesn't help that her roommate comes from a hard-partying town, and likes to have Rachel visit on weekends and breaks... and for Rachel, it's a whole different culture from the one she grew up in.

Add to that Rachel's parents getting separated as soon as they dropped her off, with her mom off to join a psychic cult; her dad stays home, but takes up aerobics and starts dating the instructor.

I am not sure that they mystery really held together; I particularly wonder how Bridget hooked up with the forgery gang. The rest of the ring made some sort of sense. Although it does seem that the people buying the forgeries may notice something when their insurance appraisers report multiple "originals" of a single painting- and serious art buyers DO get their artworks appraised and insured.

Still- it was a very fun novel to read, and I'd read more in the series if the ebooks were less pricey.

Deep Fried and Pickled The Rachael O'Brien Chronicles Book 1 edition by Paisley Ray Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

After reading some of the "disappointed" reviews, I had to weigh in on this series. If you are looking for a serious book addressing college drinking, etc. in a serious way - this is not the book for you!! I attended college as an older adult, so I am NOT running down memory lane, I just enjoyed this book and its continuing series for the absolute silliness of a fun book. There is great dialogue, the mysteries are mostly misunderstandings, and every time she tries to throw herself into a basic college situation to lose her self-control - it never ends up as she planned, and you want to laugh at how it does end up. I am an older adult who can still enjoy a funny, sassy, silly, young person's POV, and I really am waiting patiently for hr next installment. Don't you remember what is was like to be young, and make some bad choices or have things go in a very different way than you planned? Those are the things that make us laugh later in life, how we survived it all! It's fun FICTION, it's not how I would have my daughters or grand-daughters behave, but so many young people do in an attempt to find their own way in life, told in a funny light-hearted way. Enjoy!!
I just finished this and read the tidbit of the next offering.
I'm not sure where I stand.
On the one hand, Mizz Ray's writing is easy to read, flows well, and is enjoyable.
On the other, it is as though she could not decide whether she was writing a mystery or a view of a college girl in the '80s.

Short synopsis It is 1986 and Rachel O'Brien is off to university and on her own. Her parents drop her off and she has a list for the coming year. Do well in school and lose her virginity. Along the way, she encounters a possible forgery ring. Hence the quibble about the story line. She also has to deal with her mother leaving her father to 'find herself.' The result of that is her father acquiring a new girlfriend she does not like. I can see that both of these will serve in later books. That's okay, many authors introduce plot points for their next book in another.

The character of Rachel is well-drawn, I like her. I enjoyed all the various characters as I could relate to all. As a Southerner, I got many of the references. I just think a little more mystery plot line would have helped. There were points where I almost forgot about that part as time was being spent on Rachel, her friends, and her determination to lose her virginity. The mystery almost gets lost. And it really is a good story. Rachel's introduction to small town North Carolina is a hoot. Again, I can appreciate it as I know the culture. I just wanted better weaving of the bucket list and the mystery.
I am absolutely in LOVE with this series! I am on book 7 of the Rachael O’Brian Chronicles now, and can't stop, but I wanted to head back and do some reviews starting at book #1. This series is set starting in 1986 when the heroine goes to college-- I started in 1985. No cell phones, no computers essentially, it is really a fun series to read. Rachael O’Brien is a funny girl with an eidetic memory, that comes in handy, but isn’t overused in the series. She makes friends pretty easily, and is a good friend who happens to run into some precarious situations. With a family interest in fine art and restorations, Rachael is pursuing a degree in Art History in NC. Her adventures take place here, at home in Ohio, and sometimes on Spring Break with her friends.

Paisley Ray has a beautifully visually style of writing. I can see every action and setting, as if I were watching a movie. Her characters are well written and easy to visualize. So far, each one has maintained their uniqueness although they do grow from Book 1 (Freshman Year) to Book 7 (Senior Year). They are hilarious and get into plenty of messes of their own.

I am uncertain of the negative reviews—especially those who never got past the 1st quarter of the book-- but yes, this IS about a College Girl. They do go out drinking, but it isn’t promoting drinking, just telling the story of college in the ‘80’s. The drinking age was 18, switching to 21. I thought there was so much more to the story that it being about “18 year-old antics”. Well, it was set in the character’s Freshman year of college, so I’m not sure what you expected??

The most amazing part to me is how well Ms. Ray kept to the right clothing, cars, language, etc. for the ‘80’s. It isn’t easy, but I’ve only seen one glaring error so far. Well done and so charmingly retro for those of us who lived it back then.
This series is a bit mystery, some nostalgia for some of us and a hint of romance but 100% clean reading in the romance department. If you are looking for an enjoyable series to relax with, Rachael O'Brien is the gal you want to be with.

I found this series via Bookbub, and read the subsequent titles using ’s Unlimited, which unfortunately doesn’t count paying a monthly subscription to borrow their books as Verified Purchases yet.
