An Enchanted Season Maggie Shayne Erin McCarthy Nalini Singh Jean Johnson 9780425217856 Books

This collection was ok, but not great. Honestly, three out of the four stories were just a little too wholesome and sweet for me. I like a little grit in my romance novels. The only one I really likes was the Naomi Singh one, which thankfully, was the reason I purchased this book. The first two stories were ok, but nothing that inspired me to look into other things the authors have written.

In the Naomi Singh story I enjoyed seeing Nate and Tammi well before the start of the Psy/Changeling series and see them making their own mistakes.

The last story was ok right up until the ending. The reveal at the end of the story left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't mind reappropriation of historical/mythical characters, but only if the new use remains true to the feel of the characters. Vampires are a good example - there are many, many variations of vampires out there these days. And so long as there's some kind of weakness/problem brought about by exposure to sunlight and they have to drink blood, I'm fine with everything else. Lose one of those two things and you don't actually have vampires. In the last story in this book, I liked the idea of three immortal friends wandering about at the solstices helping to make the world a better place by helping people rediscover love. It's a nifty idea. I was not a fan of the reveal that they were actually the Biblical three wise men. The Biblical three wise men traveled to find and welcome the new king/messiah. Not traveled in order to save Mary and Joseph's relationship.

An Enchanted Season Maggie Shayne Erin McCarthy Nalini Singh Jean Johnson 9780425217856 Books Reviews

I read three out of the four short stories in 'An Enchanted Season'.

I purchased the book mainly for Nalini Singh's, 'Beast of Temptation'. I love her Changeling-Psy series and didn't want to miss out on this one. Short story is not my favorite writing style but I enjoyed getting the back story of Tamsyn and Nate who are important secondary characters in the Changeling-Psy series. Tamysn has to overcome Nate's reluctance to make her his mate (he thinks he's doing the right thing since she is much younger). Tamysn does a good job of bringing Nate to his senses. I'm a sucker for a love story where the hero takes a while to realize how much he needs the heroine but once he does, nothing stands in his way.

Maggie Shayne's, 'Melting Frost' was boring. The love story came together too quickly for me; would have liked more story development

'Charlotte's Web', by Erin McCarthy was very enjoyable. Charlotte and Will are best friends. Neither is aware that they both love one another. The revelation of their feelings is a very satisfying read with some funny moments. The last chapter is a bit rushed but Erin McCarthy introduces the readers to a story about Charlotte's sister, Bee, which I hope means a sequel. This was my first Erin McCarthy story; I will be checking out some of her other stuff.
Nalini Singh is as wonderful as ever and she is the reason I bought this book- I love her Psy series. Maggie Shayne had a cute read, and I enjoy her full length novels as well. I found Erin McCarthy to have a real saucy story and she grabbed my attention...I am actually going to see what else she writes. Jean Johnson's story was a weird religious type story..characters were ok, story didn't really connect for me, and I tried to like it but just couldn't. It didn't really make any sense and read like a bible study. Again..Weird. Although I liked the other stories, this wasn't worth the money. It was kind of expensive for what you get, I wish I had just ordered it through the library. And I don't mind spending money on books that I enjoy...I would pay big bucks for Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh, Jayne Krentz, Patricia Briggs, Jeanine Frost, and others, or anthologies like Must Love Hellhounds. You want a great anthology where there isn't a bad story in the bunch and they are actually all great, then Check out Must love Hellhounds...awesome in my opinion.
An anthology of Christmas stories, perfect for the holiday season. It includes four shorts Melting Frosty by Maggie Shayne, Charlotte’s Web by Erin McCarthy, Beat the Temptation by Nalini Singh, and Gift of the Magi by Jean Johnson. Because these are short stories I can’t really tell you what they are about without risking revealing the whole thing up, but I’ll do my best to review them without spoilers.

So I read this book due to the Vet VS Newbies challenge at Goodreads’ Gotta Have Paranormal Romance with a Kick Group. The book showcases spirits, witches, werewolves, and the magi and I totally love it. I usually stray away from Christmas books unless I want to read a story from a particular author. It’s nothing against the books, just not what I normally read. Which is why I’m so glad that I was given this book as one of my alternatives, otherwise I would have missed it completely. All four stories are worth the time and can be read in one sitting.

Here is the breakdown

Title Melting Frosty
Author Maggie Shayne
Review
Do you believe in the future, your future, to be pre-ordained? Would you follow the signs if you knew someone was giving you directions from the hereafter? There are three main characters Mathew, Holly, and the fedora hat. Mathew lost his father one fretful Thanksgiving eve. The last reminder of his father’s presence –a fedora hat– was also lost that time; as a consequence he has hated Christmas ever since. Meanwhile, Holly lost her entire family during Christmas as well, and even though she lost everything, her mother’s love for the holiday has kept her going on strong ever since. Now Fate has found a way to put these two together and the result is a beautiful, sweet, feel-good type of story that just warms you up and keeps you smiling as you read it through.

It’s a very quick read, as is just a short story –you can finish it up in one sitting. I highly recommend it, especially since we are in the holidays.

Title Charlotte’s Web
Series Murphy Sisters, Book 1
Author Erin McCarthy
Review
I enjoyed the story, the dynamic between the Murphy sisters reminds me a lot of the dynamic between the Halliwell sisters from the TV series Charmed; the same type of banter and strife. It was a good story but I didn’t connect with Charlotte as much as I would have loved to. In fact, the moment Bree (the second sister) crosses paths with the uptight guy at the coffee shop I wanted to switch story and follow hers instead. In all, the story is sweet, fulfilling, nice, and fun at times.

Title Beat of Temptation
Series Psy-Changeling, Book 0.5
Author Nalini Singh
Review
A great story that keeps you glued until the very end. Although I have read books by Nalini Singh before this is the first story I read about her Psy-Changeling series. I am officially hooked; I want to read more about it. The story has great characters and interesting plot.

I do have to say that I felt like I needed some parts explained better, so I guess that this story is best read after one has begun the actual series, were more information about their universe is given. The truth is that I didn’t really need it to understand the story –it’s a solid standalone– but I felt slightly like I was reading a story from the midpoint onwards.

Title Gifts of the Magi
Author Jean Johnson
Review
I haven’t read anything from Jean Johnson until this point, but I will make a point about getting more books from her. This is by far the best of all the stories in this anthology, to the point that it made me cry; that’s how good it is. The Three Magi is a beautiful story about the miracle that is love in everyday life and how one must keep it alive with the help of simple, little actions. It takes the story of the Three Wise Men and extends it into modern times. I definitively believe that this one is worth reading; especially on this season.
