Interesting plot, but the characters were unbelievable as well as their ability to rise to ascendancy in every situation. If treated as pure fiction, this is a captivating tale but it should not be used as a treatise on spiritual warfare or the fundamentals of the Christian faith. I gave it three stars for the fiction.

The two messages stressed are that we act sinfully because we give in to all-pervasive demonic influences that prey on our "weaknesses" (not because we are born as sinners); and that the way to overcome the "principalities and powers" is by love - not Jesus' love, but our human love for each other.

Although exorcisms were performed in Jesus' name, one exorcist was an hours-old baby Christian and the litany used rendered the scenes unconvincing. It was disappointing that the author didn't research his subject better. (When the disciples themselves could not exorcise a demon, Jesus said "This kind goes out only by prayer and fasting," not to mention the instance of the neophytes who tried exorcism who got beat up by the demons.)

In addition, he does not seem to have a grasp of the teaching in Scripture on the inherent depravity of man and the need for standing in the righteousness and power of Jesus alone. "Put[ting] on the whole armor of God" is mentioned but not explained nor employed by the protagonists.

In summary, this novel is fun as a fantasy thriller but not to be relied on as doctrinal teaching.

Powers and Principalities Dan Calabrese 9781426922831 Books Reviews

I guess I can say I liked this book. It seemed to be written in a style that is almost talking-very different from the writing styles I am used to. I did like that the book was not filled with curse words or taking the Lord's name in vain. That gets old really fast. I think for me to rate it higher, the writing style would need to be different. I have now read all three of these books, and my opinion did not change. They all seem to be ho-hum. I did keep reading them so the storyline was interesting and made me want to see what happened in the end. It took days to read, and if it is a thriller to me, I can get it read in a day or two.
I very much enjoyed reading this book. The story was great, and by the end I really cared about all of the main characters. Because the author happens to be Christian, and the subject matter deals with spiritual matters which (for a pleasant change) are not outside the realm of biblical possibility, I think the book is getting a little bit over critiqued.... I think the author did a fine job of presenting a very enjoyable story, which at times deals sin, demonic influence, etc., but also made me think about some things along the way, so I am giving this one five stars. Will begin book 2 this evening )
Review of "Powers and Principalities" by TRACY KRAUSS

WARNING This novel could change your perception of the spirit realm!
Powers and Principalities is a powerful story about the unseen spiritual forces that exist everywhere around us and how these forces are bent on human destruction - both personal and global. Author Dan Calabrese weaves a tale that is simultaneously fantastical and imaginative while at the same time realistic in its gritty portrayal of the characters. It centers around three friends - a somewhat eclectic and unlikely trio - who come face to face with these dark forces of evil when one of their number is `gifted' with the ability to see into the spirit realm. Once he sees the forces at work, an even more insidious plot is uncovered and it is up to the threesome to save the city from mayhem and destruction. Not since Frank Peretti's groundbreaking novel This Present Darkness was released 25 years ago, has a novel about spiritual warfare had this kind of potential to impact people's thinking on the topic. Powers and Principalities jumps in with both feet and comes out swinging.

Having said that, as a work of `Christian' Fiction this novel is sure to raise a few eyebrows, or, as is more likely the case, garner some strong criticism from mainstream church-dom. As `Edgy Christian' fiction, it is way beyond edgy. Perhaps the initial warning could have read `Explicit language and graphic sexual descriptions'. However, since author Dan Calabrese has done this himself quite openly in the preface to the novel, there is no need. Mr. Calabrese clearly explains to the reader what is coming, and why he chose to write in this style - a style that many Christians will undoubtedly question and certainly that many more will find offensive. Reader, consider yourself warned! This is not a novel for the squeamish, sheltered, or faint of heart. Mr. Calabrese has deliberately chosen to write in a realistic style that doesn't pull any punches. Demons aren't pretty, and their activities aren't either.

For those who choose to read past the third page, you will find that this authenticity only adds to the sense of urgency that the author is trying to portray. It also adds credibility to his characterization, not only of the humans, but of the demons controlling them. Social issues are presented in all their raw intensity without any sugar coating whatsoever. This is a current and relevant story for the modern reader who is not afraid of the truth - ugly or not. Ultimately, this is also a novel about redemption. There is no mistaking the evangelistic message, but the characters are portrayed as real people with flaws - even after conversion - which is both refreshing and believable. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting an intriguing yet thought provoking read. Read with an open mind, this novel could have great impact as an evangelistic tool as well as serve to enlighten the minds of believers. Bravo to Mr. Calabrese for such a gutsy and timely treatment of spiritual warfare.
I don't usually read for fun. I prefer to read for knowledge and I usually find fiction pointless. However, knowing the interesting man who is Dan Calabrese, I thought perhaps it wouldn't be a complete waste of time to check out his books. I was not disappointed. I grew up in a Baptist church so I have found it to be a unique challenge to listen to Dan's take on his relationship with God and the way he views the spiritual world. While I don't always necessarily agree, it is always thought provoking. I have found myself questioning a lot that I took for granted based on my early Christian education. This book is hiding a story that kept me coming back to it daily. I'm the kind of person who usually figures out the whole plot and outcome of a movie 5 minutes in but this book kept me guessing until the very end. I especially appreciated how much more realistic it was when determining the character and actions of people who don't know Jesus. It didn't gloss over reality. I'll be reading the next book for sure. Thanks for all that you do, Dan, to show people the way to forgiveness through Jesus!
