In this debut novel, Carole Brown has written a powerfully convincing account of cult activities that exist in our society. She has created characters that are diverse, authentic and credible. The creation of an assemblage of ominous, dark and depraved individuals who know no propriety is powerful. Heinous, inhumane and diabolical activities and corruption throughout this novel evoke intense and powerful emotions. This novel is written with intensity, integrity and candor, a page-turner of epic proportions where redemption is the ultimate objective. I highly recommend this book for those interested in the revelation of cult activities. This book is not for the fainthearted.

There is a shameful culture of silence around rape and domestic violence in the church. Carol Brown has crafted a story with clear delineation between real faith and heresy. Her book is riveting and will open many eyes not only to the horror of cults but to the terror of abuse that is prevalent within the entire faith community. As a domestic violence counselor, and a Christian, I have worked with thousands of Church women and can confirm that some of the abusive practices mentioned in Brown's story are alive and thriving, not only within religious cults, but in mainline churches across America. One in four women of faith are victims or survivors of abuse. Unfortunately, pastors receive little (mostly zero) training on the dynamics of domestic violence while in seminary, leaving them incapable of guiding victims to safety. Carol Brown writes with compassion, and her book will help many women who are struggling within an abusive marriage that is condoned (or ignored) by her church family.

A story of the hold cults can have on people and the things they do to please their leader. It is also about how the love of God shown through a minister can heal. Cara has been hurt terribly at the hands of this cult, struggle to even believe that God exists let alone loves her. Dwayne who also was hurt by this cult returns knowing the truth wanting to show these people Gods love for them. A Great story. It is a story replayed in peoples lives today. I recommend this book highly.
This was an uncomfortable book to read. The fact that such sects do indeed exist in our society today is what makes it difficult to read. The Sons of Righteous Cain is a religious community that tries to stay separate from the rest of the world. But as we see in the story, that goal is the only way the lecherous leader and his cronies can continue to operate. They keep tight-fisted control of the community with fear, lies and intimidation. But after the ways of the community result in the death of her first daughter, Caralynne Hayman vows revenge, endangering not only herself but her two younger daughters as well. Dayne McFarland, her friend and foster brother from childhood, gains her trust and attempts to change the attitudes of the men of the community. But he meets with limited success and earns the wrath of the wicked Elder Simmons and his vile henchmen.
Ms. Brown weaves several themes into her story, including forgiveness vs. revenge, the power of love to overcome hatred and evil, and the importance of thinking for oneself rather than allowing someone else to dictate God's directions for one's life. This story points out the necessity of reading God's word and becoming familiar enough with it to know when it's being twisted for evil purposes.
As difficult as the book was to read, I had a hard time putting it down. The action kept me wondering how Caralynne would get out of each scrape, and whether her own vendetta would bring harm to her two young daughters before she finished. When a book makes me want to sit and ready all afternoon to the exclusion of everything else, it earns five stars. And that's what Ms. Brown's book did. I look forward to more from this author.
While I enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to get back to it, there were threads of narrative never completed. What about the ladies in "The House"? Did Felicia get psychiatric help and get her son back? We're all those elders charged with statutory rape? What was the situation of Cara's mother at the beginning. It was only seen from a child's eye view? What happened to law enforcement who were doing the elder's thumb? If this will be covered in a follow-up novel, it should be stated at the end.
